New list update: Rankings for 2024 are in!

Games from 2024 have finally been added to the database! In the top spot for 2024, predictably, is Astro Bot, which not only dominated last year’s end of year lists and awards ceremonies, but also placed 39th in IGN’s The 100 Best PlayStation Games of All Time list.

The rankings for 2024 games are currently based on very limited data, and they should be treated accordingly. So far, only two lists compare games from 2024 to games from earlier. This is not enough for accurate all-time rankings. As more lists come in, the consensus will reveal itself and the rankings will become more accurate.

For this update, a number of single platform lists have also been included. More of these will be added throughout 2025, with the goal being to achieve enough resolution to expand the list to around 1500 games. Only lists for platforms for which no new games are being made are eligible for inclusion, and the focus is on pre-2010 platforms since that’s where the resolution is currently worst.

If you appreciate the work that’s gone into this, and you would like to support the project, then please consider making a donation. Thank you!

Another update!?

I didn't expect to be updating again so soon either, but three things made it worth doing:

  1. The ranking algorithm has been significantly improved, meaning that the new rankings are a much better reflection of the source data. The difference between algorithms is small for most games, but there are a few cases where the change makes an appreciable difference.
  2. A glitch that caused some games to be marked as eligible for lists that they were not actually eligible for has been corrected. This was causing a few games (particularly Persona 5) to be quite underrated.
  3. A data entry error that was causing games from 2023 to be enormously overrated has been corrected.

Beyond these changes, IGN's recent list, The 100 Best PlayStation Games of All Time, has also been added.

Games from 2024 will be added early next year.

The update is finally live!

This one has been a lot of work. Here's the full list of changes:

  • The reputation scores have been completely redone and are now much more in line with the consensus on source reliability.
  • More than 100 data entry errors have been corrected.
  • New lists have been added, including two big all-time lists from GameStar.
  • Lists from five publications have been removed for not meeting the minimum reliability standard.
  • Year and decade lists now show the corresponding year/decade ranking, with the all-time ranking shown as a subheading.
  • When using the advanced filters, you can now switch between seeing the filtered ranking and the all-time ranking.
  • A donate page has been added, and donations can be made through PayPal. All donations are very much appreciated and will help me to continue updating and improving Acclaimed Video Games.

I hope it was worth the wait.

Update progress

Yes, the update is still coming but unfortunately it won't be done by the end of October. There have been a number of setbacks, but the main reason it's taking so long is because it's going to be a bigger update. When I announced it back in September, the plan was just to add some additional lists that had been brought to my attention, as well as bring the existing lists in line with the new internal note taking features, correcting any data entry errors in the process (there were many).

All of that work is done, but I've set myself the additional task of updating the reputation scores to bring them more in line with the consensus on source reliability. This is tedious work, but I'm already more than halfway through. The expected completion date is around mid-November, and it's unlikely to be delayed any more than that.

Thank you for your patience.

Update coming soon

The next list update will be in mid to late September, assuming there are no obstacles. Major additions are lists from Gamestar.de, and the book From Pong to Oblivion: The 50 Greatest Video Games of All Time. A few lists from smaller publications have also been added. Besides that, numerous data entry errors have also been corrected. The exact rankings won't be known until closer to the update, but two games that will very likely enter the top 1000 are Cyberpunk 2077 and Factorio. I know this will be welcome news for a lot of people. This is a minor update to the list itself, but there have been major upgrades behind the scenes that will make my life a lot easier as the project grows.

Edit: Due to illness, the next update will not be until late October.
